Back on the 19th of March, the Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland erupted for the first time in 800 years – and French director and photographer Stéphane Ridard was there to capture this event in all of its glory. He documented the eruption in a short video called Stranded, and it’s guaranteed to take your breath away.

In an interview with DeMilked, Stéphane said he had moved to Iceland just two weeks prior to the eruption, and simply couldn’t believe his luck. “It was a sign for me, something I couldn’t miss,” said the photographer. “As soon as I could, I went to see this amazing unique moment.”

Stéphane says that he started making videos around nine years ago, when he was 18 years old, initially creating videos for French DJs. Recently, he had moved to Iceland to shoot more outdoor content.

When asked what challenges he faced when filming the video, the photographer said the biggest problem was the weather. “The wind was crazy. And we had a mix of rain and snow. It was raining a lot. A LOT,” said Stéphane. “So it was a risk for the drone but it’s worth it to take the risk.”

To shoot the video, Stéphane used a Mavic Pro 2 drone.
