Back in 2018, Imran Khan, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, launched a nationwide campaign called the 10 Billion Tree Tsunami where he promised to combat the effects of global warming by planting a whopping 10 billion trees, the largest tree plantation project in the country yet. The initiative seems to be going great and the project has recently received an update showing just how much planting the trees changed the surrounding environment – and you’ll be surprised how much things can change in as little as a year!

The video was shared by Malik Amin Aslam, Pakistan’s Advisor to the Prime Minister and Federal Minister of Climate Change. It compares how the Balloki Nature Reserve looked back in 2019 and how it looks today. Before planting the trees, the area looked dry and barren but just a year later it looks lush, green, and almost unrecognizable.

As the name suggests, the project aims to combat the effects of global warming by planting a whopping 10 billion trees

Pakistan aims to plant the 10 billion trees over the span of five years, restoring wildlife habitats, enriching the soil, and providing jobs in the process.

According to The Redd Monitor, Pakistan has already planted 350,000 hectares of trees and back in February, the country’s ministry announced that they plan on planting 250 million saplings this spring, aiming to populate the bare spaces in cities. Although it isn’t clear if they succeeded as the coronavirus pandemic forced the country into lockdown.
