The Barbie doll has to be one of the most iconic children’s toys ever created. It seems like there’s a Barbie for every profession and seeing her as an astronaut, a doctor or a race car driver just doesn’t surprise us anymore. However, Russian doll photographer Lara Vychuzhanina tried to reimagine Barbie and Ken in a different setting – she reimagined the dolls as a couple living in 1980s Soviet Russia.

Everything about the little scene reminds of a typical Soviet Russian apartment of the time – from the half-painted walls and murky wooden windows to the nostalgic food packaging and a babushka cooking lunch.

The hand-crafted scene measures 60 x 40 x 50cm (23.6 x 15.7 x 19.6 inch) and is incredibly detailed, even featuring clothes hanging on a line and some newspaper-wrapped bread.

To perfectly capture the spirit of these old apartments, Lara used old photos from the Soviet era. Almost everything in the scene was made by hand (like Ken’s shirt) or given makeovers to make the items more period correct.

Lara is no newcomer when it comes to doll photography – she has won a Doll Photography Award back in 2017.

Lara even has her own exhibition called Planet of the dolls – see more photos below
